What is ELDT and why do I need it?
Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is federally mandated training required by the FMCSA for anyone obtaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the first time, upgrading their CDL, or adding certain endorsements. Since February 7, 2022, you must complete ELDT before taking your CDL skills test.
Is this training FMCSA-compliant?
Yes. We are a registered training provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). When you pass, your theory record is submitted to the TPR automatically, usually within minutes, once your permit or CDL number is in your profile.
Do I need a CDL number to sign up? I don't have my permit yet.
You do not need a CDL number to create an account or buy a course. Before you start the lessons you will need your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) number, because FMCSA requires a state-issued license or permit number to record your training in the Training Provider Registry. ELDT is required before your CDL skills test, not before the permit test, so the usual order is: pass the CDL knowledge tests at your state licensing agency to get your CLP, then enter the permit number here and start training. If you already hold a CDL and are upgrading or adding an endorsement, enter your current CDL number instead.
How long does the training take?
Most students complete the theory portion in 2-4 days, depending on their schedule. You can learn at your own pace—pause and resume anytime. The course is designed for working adults who need flexibility.
Can I take the training on my phone?
Yes! Our platform is fully mobile-optimized. Complete lessons during lunch breaks, between jobs, or whenever you have time. Your progress syncs across all your devices.
What happens after I complete the training?
Once you pass all required assessments, we automatically submit your completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. You'll receive a certificate of completion. Next comes behind-the-wheel training with a registered provider (not needed for hazmat), then your state skills or knowledge test.
Do I need behind-the-wheel training too?
Yes, for most licenses. Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade and the passenger and school bus endorsements also need behind-the-wheel (BTW) training, done in person with a registered school or instructor after or alongside your theory. Hazmat is theory only. We teach the theory online, and our CDL school finder at lowestcosteldt.com/cdl-schools lists registered BTW providers near you.
What if I fail a quiz?
No problem! You can retake quizzes as many times as needed at no additional cost. Review the material and try again when you're ready. We want you to succeed.
How do I know my certificate is valid?
Your training completion is recorded directly in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry using your CDL Information System (CDLIS) driver record. This is the official federal database that DMVs check before allowing you to take the skills test.
How much does your ELDT course cost? Is it really $20?
Yes. Every one of our six online theory courses (Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade, and the hazmat, passenger and school bus endorsements) is $20, with TPR submission and the certificate included and no hidden fees.
